Why Do They Hate America?
Leaving Vengeance with God (I Samuel 24, 26)
Edited from a sermon by Dick High, pastor at First Evangelical Free Church, Wichita, KS (www.firstfreewichita.org)
Summary
David faces two opportunities to rid his life of an ongoing menace, King Saul. His response in both situations allows us further insight into his character. It also presents us with an appropriate backdrop to examine our response to people and situations where there has been offense.
Circumstances Challenge Personal Values
Have you ever allowed circumstances to “make” a decision for you?
- In I Samuel 24 his action is in response to the encouragement of his men. (24:4)
- In I Samuel 26, his own actions lead to the response of Abishai. (26:8)
Opportunity, Choice, Responsibility
What are your values? Are they rooted in and nurtured by the Scriptures?
I believe David was strongly tempted to kill Saul, but it was his values that prevailed.
Biblical Instruction Regarding Vengeance
When we find ourselves in a situation where someone has offended us, or where someone appears to be “out to get us,” or even where there is tension between us and another individual, what Biblical guidelines are there to direct our response?
- An appropriately sensitive conscience. (24:5)
- Demonstration of respect. (24:6, 26:9)
- Speaking directly. (24:9; 26:19)
Personal Application
- First, when we find ourselves in situations where there has been or is offense, Jesus Christ has established a powerful example to follow.
- Make the opportunity for growth amid difficulty. (see Psalms 18, 54, and 57)
